Hmmmmmmmmmm

Well I had intended to blog Sunday night like I try to do on a weekly basis but I spent almost three hours on the phone with tech support about my laptop from before 6:00 pm until almost 9:00 pm.  By the time I got off the phone there was no way I was going to blog :)

I can't remember if I shared about my "hole" on the back of my head - it's my cowlick (is that the right way to spell that?).  When I've had short hair I've had to make sure my hair wasn't too short there so my "hole" wouldn't show.  Well, just lately I've realized that with my hair longer - my "hole" is back and I asked the guy that cuts my hair about it.  He told me it wasn't a bald spot - which I knew it wasn't - but my hair is now growing at an angle and it splits right there.  Really?!  I wondered why if I swept my hair over a little from the side why it laid really nice over my "hole" - now I know.  So I have to really try to pull the wave out of that little bit of hair when I dry it in the morning.  But one day I got home from work, looked at the back of my head and I didn't just have my hole - I had parted the Red Sea down the back of my head.  I about died thinking "was that how my hair was all day and no one told me?!"  I informed Christi that if she ever saw my hair like that she needed to tell me - she assured me my hair was fine the day before and it was probably because I had my moonroof and driver's window open on the way home :)

I was pretty busy Saturday:
  • Christmas cards finally came down
  • Taxes finally got done and e-filed (both federal and state)
  • Car washed
  • Lawn mowed for the first time this season - in MARCH!
So....about the lawn and my issue with snakes last year.  I spent a little time talking to God (aka praying) about this issue.  I told Him that I had done several things (with Dad's help) to discourage snakes from being in my yard this year.  Holes were filled with dirt or caulk, brushy areas cleaned up, items they like to hide behind removed, along with the lawn being sprayed three times with snake repellant.  So I told Him that He had put emnity between the snake and Eve/women and I definitely had emnity last year with all my snakes.  And that nothing is too small to ask for Him to help us with, and that if we ask and have faith, He will take care of us.  I tossed some other scripture/promises at Him during our time together and said that I would walk out in my front and back yards this year - and future years - in faith that I would not have snakes.  And that I would blog and talk about this to be a witness to what God can do.

So while my mower pooped out on me like it had a tendancy to do last year - a friend has taken it to a lawn mower place for me - and I was really pooped after doing all that yard work - no snakes.  I am definitely not in lawn mowing shape since I didn't do it for half of last season.  The first picture below is Butler in the backyard before it was mowed.  The second and third pictures are after mowing.

Car Is On Order - And He's Back

Got a great phone call yesterday - from Casey (my middle one).  He was back on US soil and had been for about 30 minutes after spending a year deployed in Afghanistan!  Casey is an Army lifer with his 23rd anniversary this coming June.

This past week Christi and I were back to training to learn STD and there is a lot to learn.  We have to occ code (occupational code) each job title if a group wants STD and that is interesting.  We also have to see if we need to Bonus Up a quote or not.  Friday afternoon we started to work our review/graded quotes before moving to LTD which is the last coverage we need to learn.  I got one review quote completed and my grade back while working my second quote.....wait for it....wait for it.  100%!  I was so happy because what a way to end the week and I now had 13 of my 15 97+% to be released from some things after training.

This past week was my manager's birthday and if we wanted to pay $1.00 to wear jeans - which is the normal "bargain" to wear jeans on Thursday - we could wear jeans all week.  And her boss decided we could wear jeans this coming week because of it being Spring Break - love it.

Tuesday we had a department lunch/meeting with sub sandwiches provided.  My manager's boss was at the meeting and she was helping explain how the "defect free" portion of measuring our productivity was going bye-bye - it has been an unrealistic goal for years but other bosses above my manager didn't care.  Jenifer - Julie's boss - happened to sit by me and as Jenifer was explaining that even airline pilots weren't defect free, she looked at me.  I'm like, "am I suppose to respond, should I respond?"  So I respond - surprise.  I said, "well I hope all my airline pilots are defect free" to which Jenifer and the team got a good chuckle.

Thursday we celebrated St. Patty's day by making stone soup for lunch.  We signed up to bring different ingredients (corn, peas, etc.) to toss into the pan for the soup - and it was awesome!

Thursday I headed to Toyota after work to talk about my next leased Corolla.  I'm six months away from the end of my lease and sometimes Toyota selects people to let out of their leases early - and I was one to be let out early.  So the search for a 2012 Corolla Sport with stick and moonroof was on.  Friday my Toyota gal called me and said they found one - it wasn't manufactured yet - but they ordered it and it would be at least a month.  Ok with me.

While the weather has been beautiful - some days in the 80's - it has been warm upstairs when I get home from work.  I think the warmest day was 86.  I'm too stubborn and cheap to turn the A.C. on yet so I open windows and have the floor fan on high to help cool it off before Butler and I go to bed.

70's This Week and Last Week Was Busy

It's unreal but this week today was our "coolest" day in the 60's with the rest of the week going to be in the 70's.  The weather guy said our lows at night are going to be 20 degrees high than our normal highs this time of year.
I usually don't have a social life but last week I had something going on every night including Friday and Saturday.  Monday I popped over to a friend's house after supper for a visit that was really good.  But I stopped at Fed Ex to pick up my new laptop on my way to her house.

Tuesday night I spent over two hours on the phone with Hewlett Packard (HP) tech services getting my laptop set up, my printer going and making sure both were wireless.  Both techs were really good.  The first tech didn't think he could get my laptop wireless because I couldn't remember the password to my very old router, so he got me hard wired to the router.  Then he transferred me to a printer tech - who happened to have worked for Linksys (sp) and after getting my permission and his manager's - he was able to get me hooked up wireless.

And before all that on my way home from work I stopped at Walgreen's to pick up some photos I had ordered - which I was very excited to get.  I get home and open the envelope and stare at many pictures of small children holding magnifying glasses up to their eyes thinking, "I don't know these children.  These are not my pictures - wonderful."  I called the number on the label on the photo envelope thinking it was Walgreen's but when the person answered and just say, "hello" I thought that was weird because Walgreen's answers their phone more professionally than that.  I realized I had called the lady whose pictures I had - so I quickly introduced myself and explained why I called her by accident.  We both have Mc names.  I called Walgreen's to tell them what happened and said I might not be able to stop by until Thurs to return the wrong photos and pick up my photos so they might need to REDO (important word to remember for later) the other ladie's photos in case she wants to come in before Thurs for her pictures.

Wednesday the bug guy stopped by to do his spring spray inside and outside the house.  It cracked me up when he said he really liked what I had done to the enclosed front porch.  As luck would have it, I had some time to run by Walgreen's to drop off the wrong photos and pick up my photos before going to my meeting - cool.  I get to Walgreen's and start to explain what happened and the girl waiting on me interupts me and says "Are your pictures a redo?"  The word "redo" was written on the label of my photo box.  I told her no and started to explain what happened again - from the beginning.  She interupted me saying she understood about me getting the wrong photos but were mine a "redo".  I told her no and started again to tell her what happened - from the beginning (there was a reason why I was doing this).  She interupted me again saying she understood what happened about the other pictures and then my hand came up in front of me like a stop sign and I told her to "just let me finish explaining what happened".  The reason I wanted to get through everything was to tell her about calling the other customer and then calling Walgreen's saying that Walgreen's may have to REDO the other customer's photos.  The girl waiting on me just looked at me and then asked, "so is something wrong with your pictures?"  I told her "no, I've not seen my pictures before."  She then opened my photos for me to look at.  As I was driving away I prayed that God help that girl to get her wires connected.

Wed night we didn't have small group because it was the first Wed of the month and this month was the month all the men met - so the ladies of our small group met at one of our lady's house to eat, fellowship, talk and play a game.  I can't remember the name of the game but we all had to guess the answer to the question - which was a number - and it was really fun.  One question was like how many Hershey kisses can you get out of a pound of chocolate?  One of the girls in our small group is a Kindergarten teacher and I learned all about what they go through to get Associates to help with the "challenging" kids in the class.  I said that we didn't have kids like that when I was in school - if a kid acted up he/she went to the Principal's office.  A teacher really has to document ALOT that a child has issues to get an Associate but I'm like - they need one teacher that their specialty is teaching these kids (kind of like my cousin) so the challenging kids aren't scattered throughout all the classrooms to cause problems.

I had emailed my pastor how he had done in the Preacher and Sneaker basketball game that was played during halftime of the whatever our semi-pro basketball team in town is called.  He told me about the highlight play of the game - which just happened to be his.  He did a behind the head pass to our old assistant pastor for a 3 pointer.  I replied back that I was going to start calling him Jason Williams (who was awesome at blind aka looking the other way, behind the back passes while being in midair).  Then Pastor Josh replied with a picture of Jason Williams to which I replied that they actually kind of looked alike.  To which he replied that he thought they did too - but he needed to get a tattoo like Jason had.  To which I replied, "I know a guy".  To which there was no reply :)

Thursday my manager (and the department manager) along with Christi's manager met with us to go over all the different ways they can determine our quality and productivity.  They also told us that we need to do 15 live quotes at 97%+ to be released from different parts of training.  Remember 97% for later.  After work I had to stop somewhere on my way home.

Friday I got a graded quote back that was 96% and I almost wanted to scream "96%!!!!" like Marlon Brando yells "Stella" in "Streetcar Named Desire" or whatever that movie is.  As of end of last week Christi had 14 out of her 15 and I had 12.  After work some of us headed out to socialize because one of my team member's last day will be March 23rd and our trainer got a promotion.  It was fun to get to know some of the department peeps better but I had to leave after a little over an hour to get home to let Butler out.

Saturday night I went to my first WET meeting - it's a group for widows and I can't remember what WET stands for.  They were having guest speakers about buying and leasing cars - which I was very interested since my lease will be up in September.  As luck would have it - one of the speakers was a sales rep from Toyota that I knew, and she had called me that morning telling me that since I was within six months of the end of my lease - Toyota would let me turn my car in early.  So I had questions for her after the meeting.

Yesterday I told Pastor Josh that since yesterday was so busy - we might as well have had our baptismal service yesterday too instead of next Sunday.  We had church, then a membership meeting, then I had a planning committee meeting at 6:00pm.  Josh said he had a marriage counseling meeting in the afternoon after the membership meeting and before the planning committee meeting.  The planning meeting was for our WELLebration which will be April 21st.  We were put on hold working on The Well (aka blue building) by the City of DSM due to permit and zoning issues for a long time.  Right before Josh went to South Africa we received permission we could continue remodeling, so as of this past week the HVAC is in.  On the 21st we are going to open the building to show our membership what has gone on, have a cookout, and have a sacrificial giving drive to bring in more funds for this project.  After the HVAC, plumbing and electrical is done - our building account will be in the hole.  Needless-to-say we had a fun time last night planning this event.

And then today I woke up and drove to work in the dark - blick.  :)

Daytona 500 Excitement and Operation Greyhound Vinyl

Well, Sunday night it looked like the Daytona 500 would be broadcast at 11:00 a.m. Monday.  All bad - it was the first time the Daytona 500 was postponed and I couldn't see it because I would be at work.  My manager is a NASCAR fan and told us that the race was rain delayed until 6:00 p.m. Monday night.  Good - I could watch it.  More on that later.

After work I was to pick up my greyhound vinyl dealie from the craft show from last weekend.  I had emailed the owner of the company about picking it up at his house in Highland Park (Mike's old neighborhood when he was a teen).  The guy emailed back that would be ok, but he had an appointment at 5:00 p.m. in downtown Des Moines.  I replied back that I would be coming from downtown, so could we meet somewhere in the middle to hand it off - I suggested a location.  He replied that sounded good.  So after work I headed up 6th Avenue to sit in the empty parking lot of the closed grocery store next to the McDonald's at 6th and University Avenue.  Christi and I were laughing about my "covert operation" at work.  I'm just glad this was during daylight hours :)  I got there early so read my book (which I always have one with me), along with checking rear and side mirrors to make sure no one was sneaking up on my car (in that neighborhood you can't be too careful).  The guy arrived, the handoff was made and I was off to home.

So...6:00 p.m. and the race started.  I thought the race would be completed before I had to go to bed - nope.  I think it started raining - can't really remember - but the trucks with the jet dryers were out on the track for some reason - caution was out.  Here comes Juan Pablo Montoya, the only car around, and he had just gotten out of camera view when at the bottom of my tv screen there was a flash of flame.  I'm like, "what in the crap (yes I thought crap) did he run into?  The only thing he was close to was the truck with the jet dryer.....oh my word, he ran into the truck with the jet dryer."  Yep - and the explosion was the jet fuel catching on fire and what a fire aka inferno there was.  Something came loose in Juan Pablo's car and he lost control and ended up hitting the truck.  Juan Pablo's car was burnt to a crisp, with him calmly climbing out of.  The driver of the dryer truck was a little shook up they said (duh, he's just driving along and all of a sudden out of no where the back of his truck explodes) but he was ok too.  Fire crews were there trying to put the fire out - Darrel Waltrip kept saying, "I've never seen anything like that" - and there was concern the fire would ruin/melt the asphalt so the race would be stopped due to track damage they couldn't fix.  While that wouldn't have been good - the race could have been called right then with a winner because it was over halfway run.  So.....the fire was like an hour red flag/black flag/whatever delay.  Drivers get out of their cars and start walking down to see what happened, NASCAR officials told them to go back to their cars, one driver had his cell phone with him (think about that for a minute, had his cell phone with him as he was racing in the Daytona 500) and started Tweeting and saw pictures of what happened.  It was like 10:15 p.m. when I decided I had to go to bed and I thought the drivers were getting back in their cars.  I found out at lunch Monday that the race ended at midnight our time with a green/white/checker.  Why it took almost two hours to run 40 laps I have no clue.............  I think this was the race that didn't want to end.

It's been an interesting week working live quotes and learning all the "quirks" of what the Denver office wants done on each quote.  If 10+ lives on the quote do this.  If 25+ lives and two voluntary coverages on the quote do this.  If quoting dental high/low plans with less than 10 lives do this, if over 10 lives do it this way.  Next week is more live quoting and then we learn disability.

Thursday on my way to work I ran over a shovel in the middle of 63rd Street on my to the freeway.  I saw it and I tried to avoid it.  I shouldn't have tried because if I wouldn't have tried I wouldn't have hit it.  It was laying parallel to the curb with the end of the shovel pointing toward me - and I hit it good.  I said a prayer and kept going to work.  The tire didn't go flat or the car drive funny.  I wondered if the tire would go flat during the day so I asked the guard in the Park n Ride how I would get someone into the ramp to help me since at 3:30 p.m. they close the gates so no cars can get in.  He said I didn't get anyone in to help me.  I looked at him and said I wouldn't be able to change a tire.  I said a friend would need to park somewhere outside the ramp and then I would let them in the secure door right?  He said that was correct and I would need to stay with the person AT ALL TIMES!  There is one guy on my team so I asked him if he thought my tire would go flat during the day and he thought I should run up and check it during my lunch hour - well I didn't.  When I got to the car after work, the tire was fine.  On the way home I called Toyota and talked to a service guy about what happened.  He told me to watch for a bubble on the side of the tire and it probably should be looked at to make sure there wasn't a cut in the tread.  So today while running errands I stopped by Toyota and they put the car on the lift to check the tires on the right side and undercarriage.  Everything was ok and the check didn't cost me anything - awesome!

Tomorrow is going to be a little cold (30's) and maybe 1/2" to 1" of snow but next week it's going to be in the 50's and 60's!  And it's only the beginning of March!  Love it!
